"In every child I see my God"
— Dr. N.K. Mittal
Welcome to the official website of Dr. N.K. Mittal, a pioneer in pediatric healthcare and a devoted crusader in India’s fight against childhood tuberculosis.
Early Life & Motivation
Dr. N.K. Mittal’s journey began in the modest village of Purkhas, Haryana. Born into a family with limited means but rich in values, he received his early education in the village up to the 8th standard. He then studied 9th and 10th at S.M. Hindu High School, Sonipat, where he faced significant challenges, including a difficult period under Shri Lala Dhani Ram Ji, which tested his emotional resilience. It was during this time that he was also shaped by the quiet strength and mentorship of Shri Deep Chand Garg, a respected teacher who nurtured in him independent thinking and a sincere work ethic. Later, Dr. Mittal joined Hindu College, Sonipat, for his 11th and 12th. There, Shri V.P. Arya, an inspiring English teacher, helped him rediscover inner calm and taught him how to navigate stress with dignity and live a peaceful, purpose-driven life.
From the modest classrooms of my first school in Purkhas, to celebrating milestones of life and standing with Olympian Ramesh Gulia and Neer Gulia — my village has always been known for sports, not academics. Yet, it has been my deepest wish to become the first from Purkhas to achieve MBBS and serve humanity. A journey of grit, love, and pride for my roots.
Medical Education and Mentorship
With deep academic commitment, Dr. N.K. Mittal pursued his MBBS and MD in Pediatrics from PGIMS Rohtak. His medical journey was profoundly shaped by Prof. Usha Dhall, who taught him not only the foundations of medicine but also how to live with dignity amidst hardship. Her unwavering discipline, grace, and thoughtful encouragement became the cornerstone of his confidence and professional character.
Prof. P.S. Dhatt – Mentor
During his postgraduation, Dr. Mittal was mentored by Prof. P.S. Dhatt, a distinguished pediatrician known for his sharp clinical insight and genuine mentorship. His iconic ward-round call — “Mittal, kithe hai?” — remains etched in memory, symbolizing a deep sense of accountability, precision, and pride in patient care.
Early Encounters
That Shaped a Lifelong Mission
As a young doctor, Dr. N.K. Mittal undertook a six-month residency at Rajan Babu TB Hospital in Delhi, where he actively chose to engage with marginalized communities. He voluntarily visited slum areas like Jahangirpuri, Seelampur, and Nand Nagri, witnessing first-hand the silent suffering of children afflicted by tuberculosis.
These experiences became a turning point in his professional journey. Confronting the stark realities of pediatric TB in impoverished settings instilled in him a deep resolve — to make childhood tuberculosis visible, diagnosable, treatable, and ultimately preventable. This foundational exposure laid the moral and clinical groundwork for a mission that has continued for over three decades.
Foundations of Service
After completing his MD, Dr. N.K. Mittal began his career with a year of rural service in the remote village of Samargopalpur, in Rohtak district. This experience provided him with invaluable, first-hand insight into the challenges of village-level medical practice and strengthened his resolve to serve underserved communities.
He later joined Civil Hospital, Sonipat, where he worked under the guidance of Dr. S.K. Puri, a distinguished clinician and administrator. Under his mentorship, Dr. Mittal learned the essentials of hospital management, operational discipline, and healthcare system efficiency — lessons that would later become the backbone of his institutional leadership.
On 7 June 1992, Dr. Mittal and his wife, Dr. Deepmala — a President’s Medalist and recipient of multiple gold medals — founded Mittal Nursing Home, a modest maternal and child health facility. By 1995, it had grown into a respected, family-run multi-specialty center, renowned for its ethical standards and compassionate care.
What truly sets the hospital apart is its enduring human spirit. Many of the doctors, nurses, and ward staff who joined on the very first day continue to serve even today — a rare and powerful reflection of the institution’s culture of loyalty, mutual respect, and collective purpose. For Dr. Mittal, the hospital is far more than a healthcare facility — it is a living embodiment of care, commitment, and community trust.
Child Health and TB Elimination
From the outset of his career, Dr. N.K. Mittal has remained steadfast in his commitment to child health and the elimination of vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio, neonatal tetanus, and especially pediatric tuberculosis (TB) — a condition often neglected and underdiagnosed in children.
His major contributions in this mission-driven journey include:
- Free diagnosis and treatment of over 2,000 pediatric TB patients, particularly from underserved and economically weaker sections
- Administration of more than 50,000 vaccines, including over 30,000 BCG vaccinations, ensuring near-100% coverage in his region
- Organizing regular school-based TB detection camps and BCG awareness weeks, in collaboration with local authorities
- Challenging and reducing stigma associated with TB, especially in rural households where misconceptions prevail
- Establishing the region’s first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), along with the first neonatal ventilation unit and the first Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) unit
- Advocating and implementing national public health programs like Pulse Polio campaigns, Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance, Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination, and integration of the Nikshay app for TB reporting and follow-up
- Promoting medical learning and continuous education through national and international CMEs, academic research, and regular mentoring of junior doctors and pediatricians
- Running a certified DCH (Dawn) training center, nurturing clinical excellence and pediatric expertise in upcoming healthcare professionals
Dr. Mittal’s vision is not just to treat children, but to transform pediatric healthcare delivery in India — one patient, one camp, one vaccine at a time.
Vision Forward: A TB-Free Bharat
Despite decades of service, Dr. Mittal’s mission is far from complete. With renewed energy, he now focuses on eliminating pediatric tuberculosis across India. His vision includes:
• Adopting 20 Gram Panchayats to make them entirely pediatric TB-free through screening, treatment, and education.
• Supporting 10,000 TB patients as a Nikshay Mitra, providing nutritional and emotional care alongside treatment adherence.
• Visiting schools, colleges, and universities to raise awareness for TB Mukt Bharat and mobilize donations for the cause.
• Organizing TB detection camps, especially in rural and underserved urban areas.
• Building a national network of pediatricians and physicians for collaborative action.
• Partnering with central bodies like IMA, IAP, and FOGSI to strengthen TB advocacy and care delivery.
• Promoting BCG and catch-up immunizations to eliminate vaccine-preventable TB.
• Engaging in research on shorter, more effective treatment regimens for MDR-TB and routine TB in children.
• Publishing real-world experiences and case studies to guide fellow doctors and health workers.
• Training healthcare personnel in pediatric TB sampling and early detection techniques nationwide.
Recognizing the silent toll of pediatric diseases, I have since treated millions of children, ensuring no child is denied care due to financial constraints.

Family: The Pillar of Strength
Dr. N.K. Mittal’s journey has been deeply anchored in the strength, support, and values of his family.

His late mother, Mrs. Asharfi Devi, despite enduring severe economic hardship, held an unshakeable belief in the power of education.
“Dr. Mittal’s mother, Mrs. Asharfi Devi, was the true hero behind his journey. Though illiterate, she dreamed fearlessly of making her son a doctor and went beyond all limits to make it happen — seeking help, sacrificing endlessly, and lighting the path that shaped his life.”
With the moral and financial support of her brother, Shri Hari Chand Bansal (Dr. Mittal’s maternal uncle), she dared to enroll her son at SM Hindu High School, Sonipat. Her passing during his MBBS in 1985 left an emotional void, but also ignited an enduring fire within him — a drive to honour her sacrifices through service and excellence.

Dr. Mittal’s maternal uncle, Shri Hari Chand Bansal — a renowned educationist who translated Kamayani from Hindi to English — presenting his work to Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji. This moment reflects the family’s rich legacy of scholarship and dedication to uplifting Indian literature and education.

His wife, Dr. Deepmala, has been the unwavering cornerstone of both home and hospital. A President’s Medalist and winner of multiple gold medals, she combines academic brilliance with humility, discipline, and foresight. She is a woman of deep vision who supports Dr. Mittal through thoughtful critique, critical analysis, and steadfast emotional backing. Her grace under pressure and silent leadership have been instrumental in shaping both the institution and the family.

Dr. Ruchi Mittal, sister-in-law and practicing dentist, is the administrative soul of Mittal Nursing Home. Her boundless energy, sharp intuition, and “never give up” spirit keep the hospital running smoothly. She solves problems with both compassion and conviction, often lifting the morale of others with her positive attitude and inner strength. Her leadership is felt deeply — in quiet resilience, firm decisions, and a heart that leads with love.

Their son, Dr. Nishant Mittal, born on Deepawali in 1989, has become the clinical and emotional backbone of the hospital. A specialist in Pediatric Allergy, Tuberculosis, and Neonatology, he brings a rare combination of empathy, innovation, and dedication. His sense of responsibility, loyalty to his father’s mission, and commitment to high standards in patient care make him not only indispensable but truly exemplary.

Dr. Aditi Agarwal, their daughter-in-law, is a skilled and compassionate clinician whose presence adds strength to both the hospital and the family. With her clinical precision, warmth, and emotional intelligence, she plays a vital role in patient care and organizational growth, all while nurturing family bonds with tenderness and grace.
Dr. Agrima, their daughter, born in 1997, is currently pursuing her MS in Ophthalmology in Kochi. She is the emotional compass of the family — offering peace, affection, and thoughtful encouragement despite her demanding academic schedule. Her quiet gestures, phone calls, and handwritten notes remind everyone of the human side of medicine and the strength found in empathy.
Dr. Sanchit Mittal, their nephew, is a focused and principled MD (Medicine) student at Manipal. Known for his calm demeanour and deep moral grounding, he exemplifies sincerity and reflective learning. He rarely seeks attention but always delivers results, embodying the family’s ethos of service through humility.
Arushi Mittal, their niece, has completed her Master’s in Economics and now works at a multinational bank. She seamlessly blends analytical skill with emotional intelligence. A key contributor to the hospital’s strategic and digital planning, she balances modern professional life with unwavering family values and is admired for her clarity, poise, and commitment.
The newest addition to the family, baby Manhar, their grandson, has brought immeasurable joy. Through his laughter, mealtime mischief, and innocent presence, Dr. Mittal has rediscovered the true emotional essence of pediatrics — not just as a doctor, but as a grandfather. In Manhar, he sees the future of care: pure, hopeful, and filled with love.

Through decades of unwavering commitment, he has transformed the landscape of pediatric healthcare, particularly in the field of tuberculosis prevention and care, bringing visibility, dignity, and healing to thousands of underserved children and families.
Yet his legacy stretches far beyond the hospital walls. As a pillar of strength within his extended family, Dr. Mittal has quietly supported relatives and loved ones— shielding them from the burdens of financial hardship and emotional strife, and nurturing unity where others might see division. His sense of duty has always begun at home and radiated outward into society.
Dr. N.K. Mittal has sparked a new mindset among ordinary citizens— awakening the belief that one person’s compassion and consistency can indeed shape public systems and inspire lasting change. His journey has shown that excellence is not born from privilege, but from purpose.
Today, even after decades of service, Dr. N.K. Mittal continues to engage with equal vigor—participating in medical seminars, academic panels, and professional forums, and serving as a faculty mentor to aspiring doctors . His efforts are not merely academic; they are deeply rooted in his mission to bridge the widening gap between society and the medical profession—reaffirming that medicine is a service, not a business. Through his words and actions, he reminds every young practitioner that true healing begins with humility, and that the highest reward lies not in personal gain, but in restoring dignity and hope to those in need.
With love as his compass and service as his guiding path, Dr. N.K. Mittal’s journey of healing and impact continues — rooted in values, driven by purpose, and dedicated to a healthier , more compassionate tomorrow.
